District Worksheets: Schools for New York's Future Act

A Statewide Solution to the Campaign for Fiscal Equity Court Ruling

March 23, 2005

The Schools for New York's Future Act is the Campaign for Fiscal Equity's newly proposed statewide school funding solution.

worksheetHow will this act impact the state funding for your school district?

Based on information available from the State Education Department, the Campaign for Fiscal Equity (CFE), and the Fiscal Policy Institute, the Educational Conference Board has produced a snapshot of your district's data, including:

  • estimated state aid for 2005-06, the first year of a four-year phase-in of the plan and
  • estimated Sound Basic Education aid when the proposal is fully implemented.

Background

cfe logoIn June 2003, the New York Court of Appeals ruled that the current system of funding schools is unconstitutional for failing to provide New York City students the opportunity for a sound basic education. The court ordered the state to correct the problem for New York City schools.

The Campaign for Fiscal Equity and all of the member organizations of the Educational Conference Board have insisted that a statewide solution be adopted to address the needs of all students across the state.

The Schools for New York's Future Act is the Campaign for Fiscal Equity's visionary plan to increase statewide education funding by $8.6 billion over four years and establish a transparent, simplified funding system. Every district in the state will benefit from the act's foundation formula.
